From making and selling jewelry on the beach as a teenager to having her own storefront in the Berkshires, jewelry maker Jill Reynolds’ creative career has been quite a journey.
“It’s nothing I planned for,” she says. “I never took a business class. If I had known, I probably would have. But I was never scared to take the leap.”
Jill is one of Country Curtains’ Berkshire Originals artists, a talented jewelry maker with the passion and determination of a born entrepreneur.
She started making jewelry at a young age. But it was when she took a glass bead-making class that she knew she had found a lifelong passion – and a career.
“I really love it. I love to be creative; I love to share my work,” she says.
Her jewelry — which includes necklaces, pendants and bracelets — is earthy, colorful and organic. She doesn’t work from patterns, ever. Sometimes she has an idea in mind, but other times, “I just go into the studio, turn on my torch and think ‘I don’t even know what I’m creating right now.’”
Perhaps that’s the magic of being a true artist — the ability to create something so beautiful from nothing. A piece like her popular All Seasons Bracelet is completely unique every time. Jill creates individual beads, and then carefully selects those that will form each bracelet. It is a more time-consuming process than other pieces; however, Jill says, “I can’t just get an order and fill it. It has to be right.”
This attention to craft, a huge amount of talent and a passion that you can hear in her voice are all part of what makes Jill such a successful artist, although her take on her talents is more pragmatic. “I get to do it—that’s what makes me talented. I get to practice and it makes me better.”
The result of all that practice is some gorgeous jewelry and an endless amount of possibility for the future. “I love having a little business in the Berkshires…it’s a great time to be a small business.”
Jill gathers inspiration from her daily life, including from her husband (who is also an artist and shares the shop with Jill) and the gorgeous surroundings of the Berkshires.
“It makes it easy to create beautiful things when you’re surrounded by beautiful things,” she says. “Every day I wake up and feel inspired.”
