As a professional decorator who specializes in “Design for Real People”, I’ve worked with hundreds of clients with varying style preferences, budgets and lifestyles. One thing most of them have in common is the desire to create a home that is not only beautiful, but comfortable and livable. A very popular style that embodies this desire can be referred to as the “Casual Comfort” look.
Casual Comfort is a design approach that is currently on trend, in addition to being completely timeless. It’s a look that is approachable, appears effortless, evokes relaxation, yet still maintains a high level of style and sophistication. Today, I’d like to share three simple decorating tricks that can help you bring this look to your home.
The first trick is to Bring A Little Nature To Your Design. Natural elements have a way of making any interior design feel instantly peaceful and calm. One of the fastest and easiest ways to do this is with nature-inspired artwork.
A gallery wall is a dramatic way to introduce nature-inspired art. It also lends a “collected” look to the space that complements the Casual Comfort decorating approach. A simple pair of prints can bring nature into your design in a smaller dose. If you prefer the “less is more” look in your home, a large scale set of prints can add just the right amount of nature in a simple, yet bold way.
You can bring the outdoors in by using items found right outside your home as decorative accents. Vases filled with clippings from your yard is a simple and economical way to maintain fresh greenery arrangements in your home. Pressed leaves look beautiful when matted and framed. Birch bark, driftwood, shells and rocks are examples of interesting objects to add to your vignettes or display in clear jars.
The second trick to bringing the Casual Comfort style to your home is to Add Layers. Layering fabrics, rugs and other textiles in a space not only adds depth and interest to your design, but it also creates a sense of warmth and comfort.
Layered window treatments instantly soften the look of a space. A woven or natural textured shade layered under soft cotton or linen drapery panels exudes the look of Casual Comfort by combining various textures. It also gives you maximum control of the amount of light and privacy you desire, ultimately making your space more comfortable.
Bedding is a perfect place to layer on the fabrics. The more layers you add to your bedding ensemble, the more personalized comfort control you have. A layered bed is also quite pleasing to the eye. To take it a step further, you can add a layer of natural texture under the bed with a jute or sisal rug.
The third trick to creating the casual comfort style is to Use A Mainly Neutral Palette.
A common misconception is that a neutral color palette can be flat, uninteresting or cold. Take a look at how this dark, neutral, wall color lends a bit of drama. The contrast of the dark wall color and the light colored drapery and furnishings provide amazing contrast highlighting the decor in the space.
Using a mainly neutral color palette as the base of your design does not mean you can’t have some fun with color. In this example, you can see how most of the larger design elements are neutral. The art, window treatments, rug and accessories introduce color and personality. This room appears bright and colorful, yet livable.
Another way to punch up a mainly neutral space is by mixing bold patterns. This large scale buffalo check combined with a contemporary floral pattern is a stunning combination. The mainly neutral backdrop of this room grounds the dramatic pattern mix. The natural texture provided by the jute rug also helps to temper the bold look.
