Today we are pleased to welcome guest blogger, Sarah Darcy of Classic Bride blog, to talk about decorating her master bedroom in her signature preppy style mixed with subtle coastal elements.
Our master bedroom has always tended to get overlooked when it came to decorating in favor of those rooms that company favored – the living room, den, dining room, etc. Well, after welcoming our baby Winston several months ago, my husband and I have found ourselves spending much more time together as a family at home and it’s made me really want to up the cozy quotient and make every last room in the house feel inviting and beautiful – maybe it’s that maternal nesting instinct going in overdrive?
After the holidays, I decided my project for the beginning of 2017 would be to re-design our master bedroom and give it a polished preppy look with subtle coastal hints sprinkled throughout. My husband and I are so happy with how it turned out and we both love walking into our room now – it feels so clean and crisp!

I’ve always felt like window treatments can make or break a room so I like to give special consideration “dressing” the windows. I knew it would be nice to have a pair of shades and the Duncan Bamboo Cordless Roman Shades from Country Curtains lend a relaxed richness to the room. The cordless factor is also a total game-changer – it’s so great to quickly pop them up in the morning and pull them closed before bed. (I love them so much that I’m even considering ordering a pair for Winston’s nursery because they’re also really good at shutting out extra light which we’ve found always helps W sleep better. (; )
To evoke a subtle coastal feel, I chose to pair the bamboo roman shades with a classic pair of ticking stripe curtains in navy and ivory. To finish the look, I knew I wanted a pop of gold to add a touch of formality so I hung the curtains on a Becket Adjustable Rod flanked by gorgeous Becket Pineapple Finials in a most perfect antique brass color. I think all three components come together in fantastic harmony creating a casual yet polished look that will easily transition throughout the seasons. (I especially love how this window treatment will pair nicely with our holiday tartan bedding!)
I always find it’s important to ensure pieces in the room “talk” to one another so while I chose a toile pattern for the bed sheets and duvet cover, I made sure to accent the bedding with the same ticking found in the curtains. The gathered bed skirt and corded pillows play nicely with the toile and give a cohesive look to the room as they tie in the repeated ticking stripe pattern.
We’re so happy with how this room turned out and we’ve found that we’re spending even more time in it now – whether we plop Winston’s activity gym on the bed for family time or just retire to bed earlier for extra reading time – it’s become a beautiful haven and isn’t that how a master bedroom should feel? 🙂
